FROM THE NORTH TO THE SOUTH – IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MEMORY
Photographs by Nikos Basias

A poetic photographic journey by Nikos Basias through the old Primary Schools.

This summer in Sougia, art is not confined within walls — it opens pathways. And it invites you to walk them together, through the eyes of memory and the heart.

In an age where everything moves in haste, art pauses for a moment — and asks us to remember. In Sougia, on Sunday, August 10, a special photography exhibition opens its doors to memory and takes us back to where everything began: our childhood.

The exhibition “From North to South – In the Footsteps of Memory” presents old Primary Schools from Greece, Cyprus, and Smyrna — silent guardians of life, filled with stories, children’s voices, the sound of bells, and chalk upon blackboards.

It is a photographic journey of emotional depth, reminding us that childhood is a shared homeland — beyond borders, eras, and languages.

The exhibition is hosted at LOTOS Open Art Gallery, a new open cultural space inaugurated this year in Sougia. More than a gallery, LOTOS is an artistic act of openness — without walls, without silence, without distance from the viewer — welcoming visitors twenty-four hours a day.
Here, art enters into dialogue with the place itself. It converses with the light, the landscape, and the southern breeze. It is not merely displayed; it participates. It is not exhibited; it is shared.

The exhibition is accompanied by the 124-page photo album “Memories in the Dust.”
